Toy Story 3

Watching it in 3-D is an experience, as it literally feels like playing with the toys. But more than that, what made this saga win our hearts time and again is the makers` ingenuity and impressive skill to mix comedy, poignant drama, action, and inspiring moral lessons. We are sure that everyone who watches this film will surely remember it for the rest of their lives, to infinity and beyond.

Precious: Based On The Novel `Push` by Sapphire

Despite all this, Precious has a dream to become someone loved and admired. The story goes into colourful episodes of her fantasies, illustrating the way she wants to live her life and be seen by the world. At school, a sympathetic teacher who knows her plight gets her to an alternative high school where she finally learns to read and write, and make friends for the first time. Through that, she summons the courage to escape her mum in exchange for a better life for herself and her two children.

Gabby Sidibe`s and Monique Imes` disturbingly convincing deliveries are powerful, and Mariah Carey`s presence also adds to the `glitter` of the film. Eight years after her failed attempt in acting, the singer`s performance here proved herself worthy to be called an `actress` after all. Together, the three of them deliver such emotionally electrifying scenes that will surely hit you in the gut.

How To Train Your Dragon

0

If you`re a parent who`s still not yet over Avatar and wants to bond with your kids through movies at the same time, we recommend watching this. It has all the elements that can make an animated film purely entertaining: action-packed moving images, a-not-too ambitious fusion of sci-fi and fantasy, and a general story of comedy, adventure and friendship that appeals to the whole family. Other voices behind the characters include Gerard Butler and America Ferrera. We just couldn`t help but wonder why the film guys chose to make the main boy and girl of the story sound American, while the rest of the characters sound Scottish. Another thing that we find trivial is the uncanny resemblance of the Nightfury dragon Toothless with the alien creature Stitch (Lilo and Stitch). Were they sketched by the same cartoonist?

Some animated films are written to cater to different age groups, but this one attracts the young, and the young at heart. The story line is simple and does not require one to think deep. Yet the moral of the story clearly conveys a significant message: that after all, knowledge is power.

Stomp The Yard: The Homecoming

0

If things don`t go right at first, we could always do it again to make it better. This philosophy would have been apt if the original Stomp The Yard was a disaster. On the contrary, making this sequel is a question mark by itself. Sure, the first one was a hit, fans asked for part two and we can`t blame the filmmakers for that. But as a moviegoer, we always expect that a latter movie will surpass the former. As an unsolicited piece of advice, don`t set your hopes too high for this film.

In all fairness, we think that the overall execution is not that bad. Plus, the choreography is awesome. But what makes it a lacklustre sequel? Its cardboard characters and the predictable plot.

The Oscars Aftermath

0

The meteoric rise of the award ceremony has followed the trajectory of global media consumption and our fascination with escapism, bling and the Hollywood myth. Actors are now global icons with their significant influence expanding into the realm of role models, brand ambassadors and, for better or worse, social issues advocates. Now more than ever, the A-list superstar is more accessible through social media channels and visible via the perpetual E! News updates and gossip magazines. The A-list are so embedded in our consciousness that they can be recognised by a single name; Brad, George, Angelina. Taking them to heart, the average consumer feels a degree of ‘ownership` over the celebrity and their success making the Academy Awards a strange mash-up of an election, casino, Shakespearean theatre and a high-school popularity contest.

While we are prone to get caught up in the winners and losers on the red carpet, few remember that the whole event is one big advertisement and is all about business. Your business getting your butt on more seats of more films that you didn`t watch or would love to see again in the theatre or on DVD; after all, you made it a success in the first place!

How does this all work? The AMPAS has approximately 6,000 invitation-only members from the film industry who are invited to vote and sent DVDs of the nominees. The members are only allowed to vote for films that are deemed to be ‘Eligible Releases`, which includes that they must have screened in a Los Angeles theatre in the preceding calendar year (ie; January 1 December 31). While the AMPAS prohibits the wining and dining of its members for the sake of votes, the studios campaigning tactics vary from the standard plastering of advertisements all over Los Angeles and trade magazines to more overt parties for ‘friends` and screenings around the time of the Golden Globes (the pre-cursor awards show to the Oscars which often is a good barometer for who will win). Of course, there is no way of telling if the member ever watched the films, so a standard industry joke is that the most consistent voters are the ‘producers` wives`.

Guerilla Tactics
Not surprisingly, one of the most notorious guerilla Academy Award marketers is Harvey Weinstein of Miramax fame. Infamous for his fiery temper and aggressive sales tactics, Weinstein allegedly pulled out all the stops to have The Reader nominated for multiple awards in 2009. In 2002, he spread rumours that the real-life protagonist in A Beautiful Mind was anti-semetic in order to win votes for his film, In The Bedroom. And, he is largely credited with the Hollywood spending phenomena after he dropped US$15m on advertising promoting Shakespeare in Love to blunt Saving Private Ryan in 1999.

So the question remains, is all of this posturing just a matter of ego, or does the saying, “When Oscar talks, the Box Office listens ring true? According to the Hollywood Reporter, the current batch of nominees (winners/losers by the time you read this), has already noticed the ‘Oscar bump` with The King`s Speech seeing its US box office rising 66% the day after it was nominated for Best Picture. Keeping with this theme, other nominees such as The Fighter and True Grit took an additional 46% and 41% respectively after their nomination. Further evidence is supplied by an IBISWorld report suggesting that the average Best Picture winner in the last four years has experienced a 22% increase in revenue after being named a nominee and an additional 15% increase with a win.

However, if you scratch the surface a little, many films anticipated to be contending for Oscars are released in December in order to be deemed an ‘Eligible Release` and then piggy-back off anticipated Oscar-hype to drive their earnings higher than what they might expect in other times of the year.

One study estimates that the average boost for a Best Picture nominated film released in the first quarter of the year is US$673,082, while the same film released in the fourth quarter would recoup an additional US$7,830,000. The seemingly standard number quoted by industry analysts is that a Best Picture nod will earn the film an additional US$20-40m at the box office, but in many cases, this is a fortuitous matter of timing and the takings likely would have occurred without Academy support.

It`s important to remember that the real revenue for film studios/producers is not the takings at the box office, but the downstream revenue streams such as DVDs and TV rights which are estimated to account for up to 83% according to IBISWorld. In effect, the Academy Awards serve as a gigantic Superbowl-like global advertisement to help line the studios (and actors) pockets. No wonder everyone looks so happy to be thereâ€

This is, essentially, a teen flick and although we don’t habitually watch such movies, this is one of the best ones we’ve seen in a long time. Sure, the subject matter isn’t exactly original it’s loosely based on The Scarlet Letter after all but it sure makes for an interesting watch.

One of the reasons why this movie is good is Emma Stone. She shines in her first headlining role her other credits include Zombieland, Superbad and House Bunny and we tip her to be a big star in no time. She’s charming, cute and very believable. She’s no bimbo that we’d love to hate and neither is she a tomboy who covers up all her best bits. She seems like the girl-next-door who you’d love to have a girly chat with. In fact, she reminds us a little of Amanda Bynes, when she first made it big.

Speaking of Bynes, she does a great job here as the religious fanatic who makes Olive her own personal ‘project’. We’ve been a fan of hers for years and we’re glad she didn’t choose to ‘retire’ from acting, as she had revealed before.

Listen carefully as you watch this movie, as there are some very good and funny lines here. It actually reminds us a lot of the good ’80s movies that we grew up watching funny, non-pretentious, and with a big heart. And we think it’s hilarious too, when Olive makes a reference to the male leads in such flicks and wishes her life could be like an ’80s movie.

We have only one complaint, though. As much as we love Badgley he’s one of our faves in Gossip Girl we really think he’s too old to be playing a high school student!

SUMMARY: This is easy we give it an A for sure.
