Yi Fei (Brandon Wong) and Zhang Shi (Huang Yiliang) are the prime suspects in this gambling flick, which focuses around the duo`s escapades at the gambling table. Sooner rather than later, their bumbling attempts to fleece the dealer gets wised up to, and the pair are taken for a watery punishment by a local gangster boss, with Zhang Shi drowning as a result. This results in Zhang Shi returning as a ghost to help Yi Fei continue their exploits, and the duo soon find themselves faced with multiple gangs, three mysterious women and a final showdown at the gambling table.
It`s a simple enough premise, but Huang Yiliang, who doubles up as director on this number, manages to muck it up with an excessive number of characters, cheap looking post-production, a lack of direction, and generally subpar performances. Of course, a film has to be judged within the merits of its own genre, and these deficiencies would be easily overlooked if My Ghost Partner was actually amusing. Unfortunately, the humour in this movie doesn`t even make run-of-the-mill grade, and ranges from the juvenile to the downright nonsensical.
While we try our best to be supportive of local movies, even the most indiscriminately enthusiastic local film fan would be hard pressed to find redeeming qualities in My Ghost Partner. Time to fold this hand fellas.
Summary: A busted flush of a gambling movie.
