Monsters University – Review

The story, as seen through Mike Wazowski`s (Crystal) eye, transports us back to Mike and Sulley`s (Goodman) freshman year in Monsters University`s famed scaring school. The twist here, of course, is that they`re not the inseparable BFFs of Monsters, Inc.; actually, the two start off hating each other`s guts. Mike checks off every rule in the teacher`s pet handbook, while Sulley hams up his Sullivan family scare-legacy, successfully separating them into the age-old ‘nerd monsters` and ‘popular monsters` cliques. In fact, the entire film is a throwback to pretty much every 1980s college flick ever made, complete with wacky shenanigans, plot tropes, and stereotypical characters basically, think Revenge of the Nerds, but with monsters.

When Mike and Sulley`s competitive and immature pranks unwittingly get them kicked out of the scaring program by Dean Hardscrabble (voiced perfectly here by Britain`s ultimate hardball, Dame Helen Mirren), the two have to set aside their differences, team up with a fraternity, and join The Scare Games to reclaim their place in the school. This provides the perfect platform for oodles of frat jokes, especially with hilariously titled fraternities and sororities like Roar Omega Roar and Eta Hiss Hiss, and Mike and Sulley`s frat of misfits Oozma Kappa (yes, their initials spell OK).

Monsters University`s new characters are undoubtedly my favourite part of the film, especially Art (Charlie Day), the clichÃ
