#47 (Dec 2013)

I believe you’ve probably heard about this little film of ours that was the talk of Tinsel-and-Tassel-town across the movie-verse.

Well, cover your ears and eyes and run away if you’ve heard enough of it but we’d still like to bask a little longer in Ilo Ilo’s glorious and historic wins at the 50th Golden Horse Awards.

Come on, it’s not everyday that a small Singapore film can hold its own against and even edge out the bigger and more popular movies catering to a larger home market and starring international stars.

Of course, Ilo Ilo has already won a string of awards at film festivals all over the world not to mention the Camera d’Or it garnered in Cannes back in May. But watching the awards ceremony live and seeing the film win big at our Asian equivalent of the Oscars which was graced by legendary filmmakers and actors with whose films we are very familiar just made it all sweeter!

The familiarity of it all was just as ironic, for we could see from the expressions of some in the audience that they were expecting the more popular films and actors to win. They probably have not seen Ilo Ilo, but there’s one thing we know for sure they won’t be seeing the last of us. In fact, 18 local films have just been announced for 2014! We’ll give you more updates on these movies in our 2014 blockbuster preview/ bumper issue next month.

Fret not. Amidst all this talk of local films, we are and will still be bringing you the staple Hollywood fare check out our year-end coverage of 47 Ronin, Walking With Dinosaurs, Delivery Man and many more inside these pages.

And it seems a lot of you are really looking forward to The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which we covered extensively last month. Thank you our double-cover Hobbit issue was a sell-out at the newsstands! There are still some copies left in our office if you’ll like to purchase them.
