As a primer for anyone who`s unfamiliar with Joseph Delaney`s dark fantasy series The Wardstone Chronicles, Seventh Son is based on the first novel in the series. It`s set in a universe on the brink of a war between mankind and evil supernatural forces, personified by wicked witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore). Trapped and imprisoned long ago by Master Gregory, Mother Malkin is now free to wreak havoc upon Earth again. All that stands in her way is Master Gregory`s new apprentice Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son.
Pardon us if we`re slightly less excited by Barnes and his character, who seems unfortunately colourless in comparison to his quip-happy master and the deviously dark Mother Malkin. Bridges and Moore haven`t been in fantasy epics as epic or big-budget as this one, so it`s a treat to watch them sink their teeth into the roles with gleeful joy and abandon.
