Christian Bale, always the serious actor that he is, furthered his repertoire of diverse roles when he ventured abroad earlier this year to star in Zhang Yimou's WWII epic, Heroes of Nanking. After a 20 minute screening of selected footage to buyers in Toronto, the film was unveiled with a new name: The Flowers of War.

The film will be released in China on December 16, and the hope is to release it at more or less the same time in the US and other countries.

Inspired by the1937 Nanjing Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, where hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and soldiers were slaughtered by Japanese troops, the film stars Christian Bale as an American who pretends to be a priest to hold the middle ground between the occupying Japanese army, the city's besieged citizens, and two groups of schoolgirls and prostitutes who occupy a cathedral.

China has decided to submit the film as its contender for the Oscars.

Zhang, one of China's most internationally recognized directors, has five films previously submitted to the foreign language category: Red Sorghum, Ju Dou, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower.
