Maybe the real love story here is the one between a man and his director. Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Wong Kar-Wai have made seven films together over a period of almost twenty years, and now their seventh film – The Grandmaster – is battling its way into cinemas. It was a long, arduous shoot, with Leung training for three years before a single frame of footage was even shot. The two men, both acknowledged to be at the very top of their game in their respective careers, talk candidly about their love for kungfu movies, the challenges involved in making a the film, and give us a little insight into a friendship that’s yielded the dreamy, artistic likes of 2046 and In The Mood For Love.

Cinematic superstars are usually pretty tough to interview... perhaps understandably, since they’ve suffered a near-complete loss of privacy and are under constant media scrutiny. Every little thing they say gets jumped on and blown up (and out of proportion). Small wonder most of them clam up in interviews, uttering lovely, sweet, politically correct soundbites to a hungry media salivating for headlines.

Not so Jackie Chan. The action mega-star, who’s busted heads and suffered injuries in just over a hundred movies, is perfectly candid and happy to share his thoughts on pretty much anything – be it the state of action movies today (anyone can be an action star in Hollywood); how much he dislikes making the Rush Hour movies; and how he heads to the West to make “easy money”. The French have arrived – a contingent of French media luminaries, including actors and directors, were in Singapore in early December for a prestigious event known as Rendezvous With French Cinema, the second run for the annual film festival curated by Société Générale Private Banking. One of the films showcased during the festival was France’s official entry for the Oscars next year – The Intouchables, a lovely, smart comedy about a wealthy quadriplegic (Francois Cluzet) and his growing friendship with his irreverent caretaker Driss (Omar Sy). Actress Anne Le Ny, who’s also a screenwriter and director in her own right, was in town to promote the film.
