Admittedly, we are not fond of cancer movies; often they are too high on the melodrama and low on authenticity, which may even make them come across as exploitative. But 50/50 is so full of heart, so full of humour, so audacious, so light-hearted and yet grounded at the same time that it is hard not to love.
It is based on a true story, in this case screenwriter Reiser`s own survival tale, which might go some way to explain why 50/50 is so ballsy to tackle such a dreary topic head on, without apologies, and yet able to find joy in the journey as well.
